Rhinoplasty: Nose Aesthetics, Procedure, Surgery, Recovery

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the aesthetics of the nose and restore functional problems, such as a deviated septum.

Rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that concerns the central point of the face, the nose . Its goal is both the aesthetic improvement of the nose's shape and the correction of functional problems, such as a deviated septum. It is a procedure with many benefits , however, it is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age. This is because the face has not fully developed by then. Full transparency of the patient's medical history is of great importance, as a previous nasal surgery affects the doctor's plan for the procedure to be followed during the operation. Rhinoplasty , like blepharoplasty , is one of the most common aesthetic facial interventions.

The Procedure in Brief Rhinoplasty is divided into two categories. Open Rhinoplasty The open rhinoplasty procedure is performed under general anesthesia and begins with a small incision in the columella, which is the thin section of the nose located at its lowest point, between the nostrils. The incision then extends to the inner surface of the nostrils, making the entire anatomy of the nose accessible. This allows for the necessary interventions to be made to improve the existing problem. Thus, the "hump" on the bridge of the nose can be corrected, the nasal tip can be refined, or even the base of the nose can be narrowed through the process of lateral osteotomy. Similarly , interventions can also be made on the septum when it is deviated, to straighten it, thereby correcting any deviation of the nose from the midline. Finally, with rhinoplasty, we can also treat hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates. The nasal turbinates are located on the side walls of the nose and regulate the humidity of the nose. This occurs through the increase and decrease in their size depending on external conditions and the individual's emotions (when it's cold or we cry, our nose "runs"). In some cases , however, the size of the nasal turbinates does not return to normal, resulting in hypertrophy and causing difficulty in breathing. Open rhinoplasty is preferred by the Facemed scientific team in 95% of cases, as it can address a wide range of problems with aesthetic and functional significance. Closed Rhinoplasty Closed rhinoplasty is also performed under general anesthesia, but its difference from open rhinoplasty is that the incision is made only on the inner side of the nostrils. This provides access to the inside of the nose. There are surgeons who prefer closed rhinoplasty and operate exclusively with it; however, at Facemed, we choose it in very few cases due to the limited capabilities provided by the incision made in closed rhinoplasty, as well as the difficulty in manipulating tools through it.

Recovery after surgery It is essential to stay in the Clinic for one night. After the operation, two hemostatic sponges (tampons) are placed inside the nostrils for 2 days. For this reason, there is some difficulty in breathing during the first 48 hours . Rhinoplasty is accompanied by mild pain, so simple analgesics are sufficient for postoperative pain relief. If the septum has been intervened, a silicone splint is also placed on either side of it. Finally, if the operation also involves the correction of bony parts of the nose, a splint is applied to the bridge of the nose after surgery. The splints and sutures are removed in 7 days .

Post-operative instructions After returning home, cold compresses should be applied to both sides of the nose and to the forehead near its base. During sleep , the head should remain elevated, so high pillows are recommended. The splint is removed after 7 days , but you can still use it for a few weeks if you are concerned about possible injuries during sleep. After surgery, rest is necessary for two to three days.

How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?

Rhinoplasty surgery takes an average of 3 hours, depending on the specific case and the extent of the problem we aim to improve. However, it is a very significant procedure, as it concerns the most central part of the face, so the time required to complete the entire process correctly is not of paramount importance.

When can I return to work?

Returning to work is usually possible after 10 days, once swelling and any bruising have subsided. However, special care is needed to avoid any injury.

If I don't like the result, what is the next step?

If the result is not as desired, revision surgery is an option. However, it is important to emphasize that this can be avoided with proper communication between the patient and their doctor. The patient's expectations for the aesthetic outcome, the presence of functional nasal problems, or previous surgeries in the area, play a crucial role in the doctor's plan. The choice of doctor you trust is equally important.

Are there complications?

Rhinoplasty is a procedure with excellent results for the majority of patients. However, as with any surgical procedure, there can be some complications such as: Bleeding. Mild bleeding is common after the procedure but subsides after the first 24 hours. More rarely, it can be more intense and require a return to the operating room. Scars - Incisions. Rhinoplasty incisions heal excellently, and in the majority of cases, they are almost imperceptible. Olfactory disturbances. After the procedure, a mild and temporary disturbance of smell may be observed, which is a common occurrence and almost always transient. Swelling - Bruising. After rhinoplasty, there can be significant swelling, especially at the nasal tip, and bruising, especially when bone structures are manipulated. Bruising usually subsides in 7 to 10 days, while swelling may last a little longer.

How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?

Rhinoplasty surgery usually lasts 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the changes required.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. After the surgery, there may be some discomfort or mild pain, which can be effectively managed with simple pain relievers.

When are the final results of rhinoplasty visible?

The initial results of rhinoplasty are visible as soon as the splint is removed. However, the final shape of the nose will gradually become apparent as the swelling subsides. This can take anywhere from 6 months to 1 year, depending on each individual's body.

When can I return to my daily activities after rhinoplasty?

Most patients can return to their light daily activities after 1 week, once the splint is removed. A full return to strenuous activities and exercise is recommended after 4-6 weeks.

Are there risks or complications with rhinoplasty?

Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries some minor risks, such as bleeding, infection, asymmetry, or breathing difficulties. However, with an experienced and specialized plastic surgeon, these risks are significantly minimized.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of rhinoplasty varies depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgeon's experience, and the clinic where it will be performed. It is important to discuss the cost with your plastic surgeon during your initial consultation.

Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?

Yes, the results of rhinoplasty are permanent. Your nose will retain its new shape for the rest of your life, unless there is an injury.

What is the best age for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be performed after facial development is complete, usually after the age of 16-17 for girls and 17-18 for boys. There is no upper age limit, provided the patient is in good general health.
