Who can get the HPV vaccine? Did you know men can too? The recommended age for vaccination is up to...

HPV Vaccine Approval for Ages Up to 45.

The HPV vaccine can now be used by men and women aged 27-45. This significant announcement was made by the FDA, the official organization in the USA for regulating vaccines and drugs. Previously, the vaccine was approved for vaccination of children and adults up to the age of 26.

The HPV Vaccine The vaccine helps prevent cervical cancer and other neoplasms. It also protects against the wart virus and cancers of the anus, vulva, esophagus, and penis. It provides the body with protection against 9 different strains. These strains are responsible for causing the aforementioned forms of cancer and warts. HPV has many strains and is transmitted through sexual contact. Therefore, most adults are infected with at least 1 strain of the virus at some point during their lives. According to Dr. Peter Marks, director of research at the FDA, this approval can now prevent, in a broader age range, conditions associated with the wart virus.

The new research – HPV Vaccine The study was conducted over 3.5 years, involving 3,200 women aged 27 to 45. The vaccine proved to be 88% effective in preventing persistent HPV infection. This includes genital warts, precancerous lesions of the vulva or vagina, cervical precancerous lesions, and cervical cancer associated with the viral strains covered by the vaccine. In men , the vaccine's effectiveness was derived from clinical trial data in 150 men aged 27 to 45. These men received a 3-dose vaccine regimen over 6 months. Furthermore, data on the vaccine's effectiveness in young men aged 16 to 26 also contributed. Immunity extends (as in women) to older ages as well. The HPV vaccine should ideally be administered before an individual becomes sexually active. Practically, in older ages, the vaccine protects against the 9 strains that the adult has not yet been infected with. More specifically, if someone has been infected with one of these strains, the vaccine will protect them from the remaining 8.
